The 1.25 and 2.5 degree is the most popular for many models and still use premium pump gas. The 3.75 degree you typically need 95-100 octane. 5 degree is race gas 100+ octane in most cases.

.010" offset is 1.25 degrees, .020" is 2.5 degrees, .030" is 3.75 degrees, and .040" is 5 degrees.

They can also be used to retard the timing for turbo applications for example.
